Changes to Entering the UK as a Dual British National

From 25 February 2026, dual British nationals must be able to demonstrate their right of abode when entering the UK. British citizens cannot apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and must instead provide approved documentation confirming their right of abode.

Dual British nationals must present one of the following documents when travelling to the UK:
A valid British passport, or
A valid passport of another nationality with a Certificate of Entitlement.

The same requirements apply to children with dual British nationality.

Consequences of Missing Documentation

Failure to provide the correct documents may result in:
Delays during check‑in or boarding.
Being stopped at the UK border.
Refusal of entry into the UK.

Pre‑Travel Requirements

All entitled family members who hold dual British nationality must ensure they:
Hold valid documentation proving right of abode (either a British passport or Certificate of Entitlement in a non-British passport).
Check passports are in date and valid for travel.
Seek guidance early if unsure of requirements. Links to further guidance are provided below. Serving Personnel and units can also direct queries to Army HIVE or Regional Command Non-UK Support Team – contacts below.
